Safari!

Yesterday we went on our annual K3 Safari! It was SO MUCH FUN. Mrs. Connie hid lots of stuffed animals on the big playground, and we donned our explorer vests and homemade binoculars to see what we could discover. The kids loved seeing animals in trees, on fences, and everywhere ... they couldn't wait to see what was next!

It's possible that Mrs. Connie has as much fun as the kids with this activity!

When the safari was over, we sat down and tried to remember all of the animals we saw. We completed this safari worksheet, circling the things we saw. Finally, we took a moment to pose for individual pictures with a couple of our biggest safari discoveries. What a fun day!

Monday Funday

One of the things Mrs. Connie and Mrs. LeeAnne learned at last month's workshop was that to a young child, no set of letters has more impact or interest than his or her own name. As a result, we've started incorporating more name work into our letter studies. Today we did name cheers! You know the old style "Give me an A!" cheer? We did that, with the students spelling out their names. After each letter, the kids would shake pom-poms and cheer "I've got your A, I've got your A, I've got your A!" They loved it.

We also used a long plastic tube and funnel to say letter sounds back and forth to each other.

Finally, we did a little bit of painting, in preparation for our safari tomorrow. A girl's got to have pink binoculars, right?

Mornings

Today it occurred to me that we've never really shown you what our students do first thing in the mornings. First, we usually have one or two "seatwork" tasks for each child to complete. These might include name tracing, a worksheet, or number stamping. After the students finish their seatwork, they are allowed free play. Sometimes free play turns in to a free-for-all, but most of the time the kiddos are well behaved. It's fun seeing what each child chooses to play with ...

These guys were busy writing and playing music.

Some of our kids love writing on the chalkboard--
practicing letters is fun and educational!

These girls opted for the dry-erase board.

But it was this group of boys who inspired me to get out my camera this morning. I was so impressed with them -- not only did they engineer this train loop completely unassisted, but they played together so nicely and cooperatively. Makes a teacher's heart happy!

We have the best kiddos in the world! :)

Random fun

Here are some pictures of the fun we've been having lately ...

During ocean animal week, we've had a lot of fun with this "Five Little Fishes" rhyme. (You can find it on our Songs & Fingerplays web site). Mrs. Connie plays the role of the shark, snatching up our kiddos one by one and gobbling them up with kisses. They love it!

This little cutie was super excited to have his big brother, who's in K4, push him on the swing.

One day we lined up end to end on the gym floor to compare our collective length with that of a blue whale.

This creative guy made a face with his lunch one day ... check out the closeup below. We love their imaginations!

Mrs. Conie reads "Storm's a Coming!" and shows the children her tornado in a jar.

A trip around the world!

Yesterday was the annual HVCS World's Fair, one of the many neat learning opportunities here at Hickory Valley. Each grade studies a different country or continent, and they spend the year learning about that place. These studies culminate in the World's Fair, when we all become world travelers and travel from continent to continent (classroom to classroom) learning about the different places in our world.

Our first stop was Asia ... the students were excited to remove their shoes before entering the Asian classroom, as is common with many Asian cultures.

First, we watched a student-produced video about the Asian countries the fifth grade studied.

Our students were entranced--and a little nervous--about this cobra as the older students demonstrated snake charming. Once they figured out the snake was a toy, they loved it!

Here's a video of the snake being "charmed":

After Asia, we headed to Australia! The second-graders were eager to share their handmade Australia books with us and show us what they'd learned.

We also tried on aboriginal masks and saw a giant shark from the Great Barrier Reef!

After a snack break, we traveled to Africa! We boarded our safari jeeps and headed across the vast continent.

Our students were all ears as the third-grade tour guide gave us instructions!

In addition to the animal safari, we saw some native masks, listened to African drums, and learned about some African countries.

Next, we went to Europe. A highlight of Europe, especially for our boys, was investigating castles the fourth-graders had built out of cardboard. It was hard keeping our hands to ourselves amidst such fun!

The fourth-graders had also made replicas of each country's leader, so we had a little fun with that.

Where else in Chattanooga could you have your photo taken with England's Queen Elizabeth?!?

The fourth-grade girls love helping with the K3's, so most of our girls wanted their picture taken together!

Mrs. Connie wanted her picture taken with the Queen of Denmark!

Finally, we learned a traditional Greek dance!

After all this traveling, we really worked up an appetite. Luckily it was time for lunch. Lunch on World's Fair day is special because we get to sample food from all of these wonderful countries!

On the plate in the bottom photo, some of our favorite foods included mac & cheese (from Canada, top left), fairy bread from Australia (top center), fresh fruit from South America (top right), lentil cake from India (top right), chicken and veggie stew (from Africa, bottom left), European scones, cheese and cookies (bottom right), maple leaf cookies from Canada, and black beans from Africa. We also enjoyed friend chicken from the good ole' U.S.A.

After lunch, it was time for one more stop ... this time to Central and South America. By this time, the attention span of our young students was starting to wane, so we made it a quick trip. :)

Last but not least, Mrs. Connie managed to get herself attacked by a boa constrictor! She may have missed her calling as an actress ...

What a fun day--exhausting, but FUN!
