Random fun

This will be a bit of a catch-up post ... we've been doing so many fun things that it's hard to keep up with them all!

As we entered the month of October, we began one of our favorite units -- Fall! Mrs. Connie and Mrs. LeeAnne both LOVE the season of fall, so we pack as much as possible into this study! One of the concepts we've introduced is that of a seed being planted. Not only does this serve as a simple science lesson, but it's also reinforced through our Bible study. We sang a song entitled "He Plants Me Like a Seed" ...

Have we mentioned how much we love having a piano - and a pianist - in our room?!?

... and then we did a craft to go along with this.  Our students painted a paper plate orange, then painted black construction paper yellow. After cutting out leaves from the yellow, they glued them to the orange plate. Finally we glued real sunflower seeds to the center!

Paper plate sunflowers, with some of our song lyrics written on the stem.

As we concluded our Five Senses unit a few weeks ago, we took the students outside for something a little different: a smell test! We filled small shaker bottles with different smelly items -- garlic, lemon juice, vanilla, peanut butter, banana, and vinegar. Some smelled really good!

Others, not so much!

If you'll check the Songs and Fingerplays link from our main website, you'll see a poem titled "Five Little Pumpkins." This week we had a lot of fun enacting the story. Each child got a chance to be a pumpkin, and they did a great job saying the various lines from the poem. This activity introduces the idea of ordinal numbers: first, second, third, etc. Hopefully we'll be able to upload some video of this soon!

Aren't these pumpkins extra cute?

Assorted fun pictures ... how cute are these little friends?

Here are a couple of simple crafts we've done -- paper plate scarecrows, which you may have noticed on our door, and a bedazzled letter E made of popsicle sticks. (Popsicle sticks or even toothpicks are great for letter practice ... if the letter has straight lines, like an A, E, or N, have your child arrange the sticks in the shape of the letter.

One parent at the school thought our E was a Christmas decoration. Maybe that means it's extra pretty!

Following up from letter B week, here are a few more of the crafts we did. I think the "Beary Special Friends" plate is our favorite!
